Flourish & Form
An illustrated exploration of type, texture, and form
2024
This personal project was a playful deep dive into two of my favorite design elements — illustration and typography. I challenged myself to create a series of hand-drawn drop caps as a way to sharpen my lettering skills, experiment with decorative form, and reconnect with the joy of making for the sake of making.
The Process
Each letter began with hand-sketched concepts, where I explored composition, scale, and embellishment. From there, I digitized and refined each drop cap in Adobe Illustrator, experimenting with detail and ornamentation while maintaining each form's legibility and expressiveness.
The final illustrations combine traditional letterform structure with a custom flair, designed to feel both elegant and imaginative.
Tools Used
Pencil + sketchbook (initial concepts)
Adobe Illustrator (vector illustration and final refinements)
Visual Direction
The series leans into bold shapes and expressive details, with each letter standing on its own as a mini work of art. Some are delicate, others playful. All are created with attention to balance, rhythm, and visual texture.
Design Note
Type is one of my favorite parts of design, and this project reminded me why. There’s something deeply satisfying about shaping a single letter into something beautiful and unexpected. This was a reminder that growth often comes from personal creative play.
