Navigating the Draft:
A Game Plan for the Fans

Designing a floor plan & scorecard for the New York Islanders Draft Party

2014

As a design intern, I was tasked with helping fans make the most of the New York Islanders Draft Party. My role focused on creating clear, fan-friendly materials that guided attendees through the event, including a printed floor plan and a collectible scorecard.

The Challenge
The Draft Party was hosted in the Nassau Coliseum indoor arena, which featured multiple activity zones, information booths, and photo ops. The team needed a clean, intuitive layout to help attendees, especially first-time visitors, easily navigate the experience. The goal was to create something both functional and on-brand that felt exciting and easy to follow.

My Role & What I Created
Working under the senior design team, I:

  • Designed a floor plan map that visually organized each activation zone and amenity.

  • Created a scorecard for fans to track the first picks of each team during the draft.

  • Collaborated with event planners to ensure the map aligned with real-time layout changes.

  • Ensured all visuals matched the Islanders’ brand, from typography to logos.

Tools Used

  • InDesign (for layout and print formatting)

  • Team collaboration via email + shared assets.

The Outcome
The scorecards were distributed to hundreds of fans during the event, and this easy-to-use guide helped reduce confusion and made the fan experience feel more seamless and interactive.

Design Note
This project taught me the real-world power of design as a guide. Watching fans hold the map I made and seeing them navigate the event with it was incredibly fulfilling. It reminded me that even the smallest printed piece can make a big impact when it’s designed with intention and clarity.
