Designing the New York Islanders “In the Community” Booklet

2014

As part of my internship with the New York Islanders, I contributed to the layout design of the team’s annual “In the Community” booklet. Sent to season ticket holders and community partners, the booklet showcased the team's outreach, events, and volunteer efforts over the season, reinforcing the Islanders' identity as more than just a hockey team.

The Challenge
The goal was to present a year’s worth of events and impact in a way that felt engaging, easy to navigate, and deeply rooted in the Islanders brand. We needed to balance heartwarming stories, strong visuals, and team pride throughout the layouts.

My Role & What I Created
As a design intern, I supported the creative team by:

  • Laying out featured stories, photo spreads, and pull quotes across several pages.

  • Working within an existing brand system while contributing new layout suggestions.

  • Sourcing and organizing community photos to match story highlights.

  • Adjusting designs based on cross-departmental feedback to meet both creative and communication goals.

Tools Used

  • Adobe InDesign (layout)

  • Photoshop (image cleanup)

The Outcome
The printed book was sent to fans and community members and was used by the marketing and partnerships team as a showcase of the team's community impact. It helped highlight lesser-known volunteer programs and served as a meaningful touchpoint between the organization and its supporters.

Design Note
This project taught me about storytelling through thoughtful layout and design. Seeing the team’s community efforts brought to life on the page made me realize how design can shape emotional connection, not just visual appeal.
